ECOvanta - About Us
How do you handle your E-Waste?
Electronic waste (a.k.a. e-waste or e-scrap) is the fastest growing segment of the municipal waste stream in the U.S. Over 3 million tons of electronic products and items are disposed of each year, yet only 14 percent are recovered for recycling. The rest typically ends up in landfills. Electronic waste, such as computers, laptops, monitors and televisions, should never be disposed of with your trash because they may contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium that may leach into soil or groundwater at landfills and end up in our drinking water. Landfill disposal also exposes sensitive data that may remain on your electronics to identity thieves. ECOvanta is your electronic waste disposal solution to prevent harmful heavy metals and your data from reaching landfills.
Properly dispose of your E-Waste with ECOvanta
ECOvanta, a new business unit of Covanta Energy Corporation, is your one source solution for proper e-waste recycling and certified secure e-waste destruction services for consumers, commercial businesses, institutions and government agencies. ECOvanta accepts e-waste materials at Covanta’s 58th Street Transfer Station in Philadelphia.
Why ECOvanta?
Our mission is to provide a safe and sustainable process that protects our environment as well as your personal data and intellectual property. ECOvanta will safely manage your end-of-life electronics using a combination of manual disassembly and an automated shredding system to separate materials into commodities for recycling. Hazardous materials such as fluorescent lamps and batteries found in many types of electronics made today will be separated and sent to licensed facilities for proper management as universal waste.
ECOvanta will recycle and/or recover as much material as possible and the small fraction that cannot be recycled will be sent to a Covanta Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility for energy recovery. Covanta Energy has over 20 years of experience as an owner and operator of large-scale EfW and renewable energy projects, each of which provides power for its community along with an environmentally sound alternative to landfills. Annually, Covanta facilities safely convert over 20 million tons of solid waste into 9 million megawatt hours of clean renewable electricity. In addition, Covanta facilities recover over 400,000 tons of metal annually.
E-Scrap secure destruction
ECOvanta also offers secure destruction services for customers who require assured and certified destruction of their electronic equipment. ECOvanta customers will be able to follow our secure chain of custody process to track and identify material as it moves through our system. ECOvanta will eliminate your risks to information integrity by completely sanitizing hard drives or other storage media using a leading software program that meets all regulated destruction standards prior to manual disassembly and shredding. Reports for each unit processed will provide assurance that your sensitive data was completely erased. As an added precaution, materials with special security requirements can be managed in a priority processing area under video surveillance.
ECOvanta is on its way to being an industry leader in e-waste. It is certified under ISO 14001 and is R2 certified to provide assurance to our customers that we are in full compliance with industry standards and operate in a sustainable manner.
